Phone Company

Ooma - Free VOIP for Life!

Ooma, have you heard of this name? Well, perhaps not, but it's an interesting company. And yes, free VOIP for life, which is as long as enough people continue to buy their product to keep this great business idea alive.

What is it?
Ooma is a piece of hardware, a simple box with a recently reduced price tag of 249$. All you do is plug this box into your home network which I hope is connected to the internet somehow; a phone and you're all set. Then go ahead and make a phone call by dialing your friend or family member's phone number.

Calls are free within the US and international calls are very cheap as well. You can even keep your existing phone number that you are currently paying for and then cancel your monthly account with your phone company.

The only caveat is that if you want to dial 911 numbers you will need to keep your landline and have it connected to the box so that you can call emergency numbers or in case your internet goes out. But this can be your local phone company's cheapest plan and will only be used when you need to make an emergency call, let's hope we don't have to make these too often.

The technology behind the device is very interesting and I would encourage you to read up on this if you’re interested. But that's about it on this product. If I were currently living in the US, with a price tag of only 249$, I would definitely get me one to at least try out. And as long as Ooma can survive these economic times and stay in business for a lifetime, then we shall have free calls for life.
